Managing caregivers
Hidden in Plain Sight : Helping managers support employees who care without losing sight of the wider team
When an employee is struggling to balance work and care, their manager is often the first person who can make a meaningful difference.
But managers are frequently left navigating difficult questions: What should I ask? What can I offer? How do I support this person while continuing to meet the needs of the team?
This practical, scenario-based workshop moves managers beyond awareness and into confident action. Participants will work through realistic workplace situations, consider different responses and practise approaching conversations with empathy, clarity and appropriate boundaries.
During the workshop, managers will:
- Identify signs that an employee may be quietly struggling.
- Explore what to say and what could unintentionally close down a conversation.
- Practise asking supportive questions without becoming intrusive.
- Consider how to balance individual needs, team responsibilities and operational requirements.
- Identify practical support options beyond flexible working.
- Explore how to agree expectations, maintain confidentiality and review arrangements.
- Recognise when to involve HR or refer to organisational policies and support.
Managers will leave with a practical “Recognise, Respond and Review” approach to guide future conversations and decisions, supported by a delegate workbook they can return to after the session.
A designated section can connect the learning to the organisation’s relevant policies, resources and internal support routes. The workshop is suitable for international audiences and focuses on transferable management practice rather than country-specific employment law.
